About Ilex Crenata Ball
Japanese Holly, or Ilex crenata, is a member of the Aquifoliaceae plant family. It is native to Japan and eastern China and was introduced to the western world in 1864.
Ilex crenata is an ornamental plant that has evergreen and dense foliage that makes it perfect for hedging. Because of its similarity to Buxus sempervirens (Boxwood), it is increasingly used as an alternative to Box Topiary Balls as it is not susceptible to Box Blight or Box Caterpillar Moths.
This adaptable evergreen loves a sunny spot, but it can grow well in shady positions too. It thrives in moist soil but can adapt to dry positions as well.
Crenata means “with shallow, rounded teeth” and describes the subtle indentations on its leaves.
