Bay Tree Bush

Bay is part of the Lauraceae plant family and is native to the Mediterranean region. It's cited in Greek mythology as symbolising courage and strength. It was highly valued by the Romans, whose gods wore branches of Bay as crowns to symbolise their status and glory. The leaves were made into wreaths for poets and were used to crown heroes. Bay is believed to derive from the Celtic word "laura" meaning green and the Latin "nobilis" signifying noble.

Bay is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, widely used in topiary to create shaped forms, such as balls and pyramids. The plant also has culinary uses and is widely added to cookery. In herbal medicine, Bay is used as an astringent and for treating wounds.

Laurus nobilis likes to be planted in a sunny or partially shaded spot. Water moderately, letting the soil dry out between waterings. From spring to summer fertilise once a month with a slow-release fertiliser.

Laurus nobilis has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Laurel oil is also used in the production of soap and essential oil.
