Adiantum or commonly known as the Maidenhair fern is a delicate looking plant with clusters of tiny leaves on thin black stems. It is native to North America and loves to grow on wet rocky spots near a water source. Consistently moist soil and a humid environment will help quench this fern’s thirst.

Caring for your Adiantum

Adiantum Sunlight

Adiantum should be placed out of direct sunlight but will enjoy bright indirect sunlight or light shade. Direct sunlight can scorch your fern’s fronds, while too little light will lead to sparse and dull leaves. Be careful making any radical changes to your fern’s environment.

Adiantum Soil & Nutrients

Adiantum need soil with lots of organic matter and good drainage to prevent the soil becoming soggy. A moss-based potting mix is recommended but you can use a rich compost. Fertiliser is not essential but a diluted liquid fertiliser can be applied once a month during the summer.

Adiantum Water

Adiantum like moist soil so top yours up regularly, with lukewarm water if possible. Make sure it doesn’t sit in standing water and reduce watering in the winter months.

Adiantum Climate & Humidity

Due to their tropical origins, Adiantum like warm and humid conditions and are well suited to a bathroom or kitchen. Avoid exposing your fern to cold or dry conditions and mist your plant with warm water every day, especially if you are using heating or air conditioning.

Adiantum Maintenance

Aside from keeping your Adiantum in the optimum growing conditions, it shouldn't need too much attention. Remove any dead growth and re-pot only if roots start growing out of the soil.
