About Flaming Sword
Vriesea are colourful flowering plants native to tropical rainforests in South America. There are thought to be as many as 150 distinct species. Vriesea were discovered by Dutch botanist Hugo de Vries.
In the wild, Vriesea are found growing as epiphytes in tropical jungles in South America. As epiphytes they live on trees and extract nutrients and water from the air around them through their centrall well and their leaves.
Vriesea are relatively easy to look after. They thrive in bright, indirect light, and like humid environments so would benefit from being kept in a bathroom or kitchen. Always keep the central well two-thirds full ideally with filtered water and ensure to change regularly to avoid root rot.
The bright coloured part of the plant is not actually a flower but modified leaves.
This plant is non-toxic so although not advised should pose no harm if accidentally chewed or eaten by your furry friends.
